Why does your skin itch after being in a sauna, hot tub, or a hot bath?

Spending time in a hot shower or bath, soaking in a hot tub, or enjoying a sauna all feel great and provide tremendous therapeutic benefit.  Heat therapy has been shown to be useful for pain relief, relaxation, improved circulation and stress relief.  For many people, however, these relaxing therapeutic sessions are followed by itchy skin.  This is typically an annoyance and not a cause for concern, but why does it happen - and what is the best way to deal with it?

Intense itching after any form of heat therapy is common.  Here are some of the ways that heat can bring about itchiness:

  1. Dry skin: Hot water can strip your skin of natural oils, leaving it dry and itchy.

  2. Chlorine or other chemicals: If the water in your bath or hot tub contains chlorine or other chemicals, it can cause skin irritation and itching.

  3. Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to the ingredients in soaps, shampoos, or bubble baths, leading to itching after a bath.

  4. Eczema: Those with eczema or other skin conditions may experience itching after a hot bath as the heat can worsen symptoms.

  5. Over-heating: Spending too much time in a hot bath or sauna can raise your body temperature, causing itching due to increased blood flow to the skin.

Generally speaking, there's no reason to avoid the benefits of common forms of heat therapy.  It is important to stay hydrated, to keep your skin moisturized - and to have a back & body scratching solution handy.  If you don't happen to have a friend nearby that is willing to scratch you all over, we recommend the Bearback Back & Body Scratcher.  The Bearback is more than a back scratcher - it is thoughtfully designed tool for providing therapeutic relief for even the itchiest skin.  And with dozens of pliable bristles, the Bearback is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin.
